How to Make a Vision Board

The other day one of our daughters went to the store and came home with a stack of foam boards and markers and announced it was time for us to each create our own “vision boards” in honor of the new year.

So, we all sat down and thought and wrote and drew and stickered little masterpieces of hope to keep us focused for the new year.

Just what is a vision board?

To my understanding, there are two main types:

Ones that originate from man’s viewpoint

and

Ones that originate from God’s viewpoint.

The ones that originate from man are to be avoided. They are either filled with nonsense or the means by which the vision is fulfilled is full of nonsense. You know, that “law of attraction” sort of foolery.

Seriously, there are testimonies of those who create vision boards so that they can attract things like money, spouses, jobs, houses, cars, and on and on. Then, when they have their hopes fulfilled, they experience horrific depression, or worse.

No, I don’t want to live a life apart from God. He is the best treat, the most amazing blessing, I could have in this world or the one to come. Anything apart from Him is not worth my time or effort, or my vision board.

So, my vision board is based on the principles that I find in His Word as He gives me revelation. I pray, I ask, I seek, and then I find the things He wants for me in the future.

Then I write it down and make it plain!

Then the LORD answered me and said: “Write the vision And make it plain on tablets, That he may run who reads it.

Habakkuk 2:2

This is an aid to my faith. On the days when it seems everything is going wrong, that there is no light at the end of the tunnel, I can look at my board and “envision” the promises He has given to me.

After all, we are in midst of unique times, are we not? The world is reeling to and fro with the pangs of an impending birth, pangs that rise with excruciating pain, and ebb into valleys of the shadow. We all need some vision, some hope for the days when they tell us all is lost and our only choice is to succumb.

We aren’t licked, because God isn’t licked.

In fact, while the wicked are certain their efforts are effective and their plans are inevitable, God is having a great time at their expense. As usual, their efforts are playing into His victory.

Why do the nations rage,
And the people plot a vain thing?
The kings of the earth set themselves,
And the rulers take counsel together,
Against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying,
“Let us break Their bonds in pieces
And cast away Their cords from us.”

He who sits in the heavens shall laugh;
The Lord shall hold them in derision.
Then He shall speak to them in His wrath,
And distress them in His deep displeasure:
“Yet I have set My King
On My holy hill of Zion.”

“I will declare the decree:
The Lord has said to Me,
‘You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.
Ask of Me, and I will give You
The nations for Your inheritance,
And the ends of the earth for Your possession.
You shall break them with a rod of iron;
You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.’ ”

Now therefore, be wise, O kings;
Be instructed, you judges of the earth.
Serve the Lord with fear,
And rejoice with trembling.
Kiss the Son, lest He be angry,
And you perish in the way,
When His wrath is kindled but a little.
Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.

Psalm 2, NKJV

I know this because of the “types and shadows” in the Old Testament stories, such as the story of Moses and the Israelites in Egypt. In Exodus chapter two we read how Pharaoh thought he would be shrewd and be rid of the threat of God’s people, but he ended up with their very deliverer in his own household!

Then, when the devil incited the people to kill Jesus, he was only making it possible for Jesus to deliver us all from his wicked, destructive plans.

And this time is no different. The devil, and the wicked under his command, have their plans, but God has the upper hand. It may look like they are winning a skirmish here or there, but the winner of the war has already been decided, and they are the losers.

This is our ultimate vision: A world where Jesus is King and we are His servants. We have this vision board written in our hearts and in His Word. The immediate vision for our lives, such as the one for the upcoming year, can be written on a simple foam board and posted on the wall to be referenced in the coming months.

If you are interested in just what specifics I have put on my own board, be sure and watch the video I posted on YouTube:

If you would like to share some of the specific goals for your own vision board this year, be sure and post them in the comments below (Oh, and don’t forget to share input for the Homeschool Mom Planner we are putting together).
